An exhibit of recent paintings by Hugh Eamon will be shown at Th’YARC from March 3″ to 31“. An opening reception, hosted by the Yarmouth Art Society, will be held Saturday, March 3″, from 2:00 pm. until 4:00 pm.

A native of Brockville, Ontario, and a graduate of the Ontario College of Art, Hugh has made his home in Yarmouth for nearly 50 years, since the summer of 1969. Hugh has been an active player in the arts community, and has made significant contributions to the practise and development of the arts here and throughout the province. He is known as a teacher, a painter, and an advocate for the arts.

He has been active in the Yarmouth Art Society since first moving to Yarmouth and is a Life Member. He was a founding member of Visual Arts Nova Scotia (VANS), giving a unifying voice for professional artists. He was also the first project manager for the building that became Th’YARC, and can tell many stories of those early years!

With fellow artist Alex Gigeroff, Hugh created a number of public murals in downtown Yarmouth. The largest and best known is the colourful triptych in Alma Square, with its assembly of familiar Yarmouthians mixed with historic figures and the purely fanciful.

Recently Hugh has been working with Mark Connell to organize and present the sketchbooks of Helen Weld, and to edit letters of Lucy Jarvis for publication.

Hugh’s subjects are often the rugged landscapes and seascapes of Yarmouth county, painted with his distinctive palette. His work is in collections throughout Canada, the United States, and Germany.

The public is invited to meet the artist at the opening reception on March 3″, to talk about art, and to see his new work. Light refreshments will be served.

Minutes of January 27, 2018 meeting

Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Yarmouth

The meeting was called to order at 1:00 pm.

Minutes from the November 19, 2017 meeting were read and approved with a minor correction.

Treasurer’s report: For the period from November 19, 2017 to January 27, 2018 opening balance was $2148.17, total funds balance is $2471.76.

Old Business:

Show Garson Sisters: Virginia gave an up-date on the progress of this show. A $1700 grant has been received. The show will feature photographs, artifacts and paintings of the Garson sisters and it will focus on the importance of art for children. During the 4-month show, there will be art talks and workshops by the participants and former art students of the Garson sisters.

Member show at AGNS: The YAS members show at the AGNS for October, November and December 2018, has been approved. There is no theme for this event and YAS members are encouraged to particpate.

Bread & Olives: Three pieces of art work sold during the last show at Bread & Olives. Virginia will contact Trish about having another small art show during March and April, as Trish has expressed interest in having another show.

Yarmouth County Museum: We will be having our usual summer show at the museum. This will be in August, September and October with the first six weeks being work from the print shop in Yarmouth along with two other print shops. From September 15 to the end of October will be a show for all YAS members. After some discussion, it was decided that Virginia will contact the Write Away group to see if they wish to participate this year. We believe this year the Write Away group should do the writing based on our art work if they agree to participate.

New Business:

Executive Board Members: All executive board members agreed to remain in their current positions.

Other:

Virginia informed us that Hugh Eamon will be having a show at the YARC during the month of March with the opening reception on March 10 at 2:00 pm. Dave suggested, and it was agreed, that the YAS should sponsor the opening reception.

Margriet mentioned asking Marcel d’Entremont speak at either our February 24 or March 24 meeting about the art program he taught at NSCC. Carol will ask Marcel if he’s interested and if so, Margriet would contact him to discuss details.

Dan reminded us that the first meeting at the Grand, concerning the new arts and cultural centre, is coming up on January 31 at 6:30. Cecil raised the question of cost for using facilities like the print shop at the new location and Margriet raised the question of cost and space available for workshops. Dan replied that there is a committee looking into the cost for these things and that it’s important for us to attend the meetings and to bring up questions such as these. Dan also said the Holy Trinity Church is putting on  events to promote the arts. Dave mentioned that the hospital is looking into having a room available to display art work.

Ann Jones and Virginia had a meeting recently with mayor, Pam Mood, to discuss the new art and cultural centre. The meeting went very well and Pam was glad to meet with artists that support the new centre.

Ivan suggested that the YAS make a donation to the AGNS as we’ve done in the past. After some discussion, it was agreed that $240 would be for a corporate membership to the AGNS plus a $260 donation for a total of $500. A donation to the museum was also discussed and it was decided we’d wait until summer, at the time of our show at that location.

Next meeting will be on February 24, 2018 at 1:00 pm at the AGNS.

Reminiscences: A Retrospective on Yarmouth’s African Nova Scotian Community is a community-based exhibit of oil and mixed media paintings and photographs put together through the efforts of four people to celebrate the history and contributions of Yarmouth’s African Nova Scotian community. The exhibit launches February 10, 2018 during Black History month and will run until March 25, 2018.

This project brings light, through a visual portrayal, to the contributions made by African Nova Scotians to the community of Yarmouth. This community-based exhibition has been developed by Tootsie Emin, a well-known Yarmouth artist, in consultation with: Sharon Robart-Johnson, Black Loyalist descendant and author of Africa’s Children: A History Of Blacks In Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, the only book written that focuses on Yarmouth’s black history from slavery to the then present day (2009); Chuck Smith, Black Loyalist descendant, retired civil servant, and community volunteer; and local businessman Bruce Johnson, Black Loyalist descendant and the first African Nova Scotian to graduate from the Dalhousie School of Pharmacy (1974). Yarmouth Town and County have been enriched by the contributions of many members of the Yarmouth African Nova Scotian community. The presenters deeply regret that they were unable to include everyone in this show.

Family Sunday: WATER-COLOUR FUN with Dan Earle

Join us for an afternoon of free flowing water and colour exploration. Watch what happens when colour hits water on a beautiful piece of paper. This will be a time to let your imagination run wild. See some examples, see some demonstrations, then “have at it” at exploding your creativity. We have aprons… get ready to splash. We will all be amazed at what you will create.

Minutes- November 19, 2017

Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Yarmouth

The monthly meeting of the Yarmouth Art Society was called to order by President Margriet Knubben at 1:00 p.m.

The minutes of the October 28^th meeting were read by Dan Earle and accepted.

Treasurer Dan Earle reported an opening balance of $2,133.17, October revenue of $16.00, and a closing balance of $2,149.17.  The treasurer’s report was accepted.

Old Business:

Our Lucky Choice show is now up at Th’YARC lobby, with 39 entries.

Because we will be having a group show in the AGNS community room next October to December, and also a summer show at the Yarmouth County Museum & Archives, it was decided that a lobby show at Th’YARC in June 2018 would be too much.

Margriet mentioned that Carol Rogers had written to correct the information reported from last month’s meeting about Project NSCC and Marcel d’Entremont’s  Applied Media and Communication Arts course at Burridge.  Marcel would be more than happy to talk about the students’ display. However last year’s class has graduated and the AMCA program wasn’t renewed.  Members agreed that it would be interesting to have Marcel speak at one of our meetings.

New Business:

Dan brought up the Facebook posting that Andre Haines has made about a New Yarmouth Arts Council. A lively discussion ensued about this, and about the letter sent to Andre by Mitch Bonnar, banning Andre from entering Th’YARC premises. Facts, opinions, and some background information were shared. Ann Jones brought with her a listing of the 204 names included in the database assembled in 2012 by the Yarmouth Artisan Yard.  Yarmouth Artisan Yard is still in existence, and this listing, though dated, can be used to build a new collection of artist names and interests.

It was established that there are two issues here: the ability of Th’YARC Council to ban individuals and what this means for our activities; and, the formation of a new Yarmouth Arts Council.

It was moved by Ivan Blades, and seconded by Dan Earle, that the Yarmouth Art Society fully supports the concept of a new Yarmouth Arts Council, and the desirability of having further discussions with the Town and the Municipality of Yarmouth.

Motion passed after further conversation.

Margriet, Ann, and Virginia have formed a committee to have meetings with Mayor Pam Mood and Warden Leland Anthony.

Meeting adjourned at 1:45 p.m.
